From one side, it`s associated with pain and sorrow, from the other - «Moulin Rouge» promises something bright, beautiful and definitely exciting. Practically speaking, everything is mixed up in our lives, laughter is associated with tears, contentment with sorrow. This play by Dani Laurent is one poignant piece about the existence of a frontline hospital in the time of The I World War. The performance of this play was the opening for a French theater in 2003 and was awarded France`s main theater award – «Moliere», having won in several categories.
The Russian version of «Hospital Moulin Rouge» was sprung to life by Viktor Shamirov «The Independent Theatrical Project» and was presented to Dubai by the one & only «Stars Dome Group».
There is nothing superfluous nor pathos about this performance – which is what most non-repertories try to achieve in order to stand out. This story is about the lives of people during the war who yarn, quarrel then make up, cry then laugh, fall in love and yet drift apart. No wonder Dani Laurant herself came intentionally from Paris to the premiere and called it – the best one yet.
France, First World War. Before us is a military hospital - one of those which were set in each section of the belligerent countries decorated with long horizontal mirrors, occupying all the space of the scene simulating the flow of time (designed by - Alexei Kondratiev).
Hospital staff consists of three nurses that have to just about work around the clock.
The foremost is Margarita (Ludmila Artemyeva), a very harsh, strong morale woman that understands all ins and outs about war. The other two – a supertestimone Suzy (Olesya Zheleznyak) and the “homey” lady Louise (Alina Sergeeva) who barely tolerates the very sight of blood and is only good for cleaning up and unwinding bandages. Duchess Adrianna (Tatyana Dogileva) along with her edgy son Pierre become frequent visitors. She is visiting her eldest son who has been wounded at war and has to have one leg amputated. The relations of these people whose fate intertwine with war, is what builds the whole story.
Ludmila Artemyeva`s work can`t be bypassed here; she managed to create an image not only of a sturdy woman that has been quenched by life and yet treat it with humor, but also to open up the soul of her heroine that she first tries to hide from the gals. The first part of the play is drenched with irony and sarcasm in each phrase, however, in the second, Margarita tenderly recalls her childhood, sincerely feeling for Louisa, that she first was uneasy with, and tries to amend the relations between Suzy and Adrienna.
No less praise should be given to the other actresses involved. Tatyana Dogileva passed the ‘mental throwing’ of her heroine – she feels for one son, yet takes it out on the other, tenderly cares for Suzy, and gets vicious when finds out she is involved with her son.
Suzy (Olesya Zheleznyak) is a woman that puts out 100%. Former pacifist, she distributes fliers and wants world peace. With same impact she treats the patients and even dances the cancan for them on that Christmas Eve – transfiguring a hospital into the Moulin Rouge itself.
Georgy Dronov is utterly unrecognizable as his character Pierre – a very innocent, kind and ill-fated man with the heart of a child that obeys all orders of those elder, wishes to get married and is amused with balls given to him for Christmas.
«Hospital Moulin Rouge» is a tiny aspect of a big raging war. The actors managed to express all the tears and joy of their characters, and «Stars Dome Group» managed to outdo themselves yet again showing Dubai`s Russian community nothing but expert superiority when it comes to theatre.
